Canon PIXMA MP830 Hack to enable direct to CD/DVD printing on printable media.

Ok, I just bought on of these babies refurbished for $199 at Fry's Electronics. I've used nearly every all in one printer on the market, and I can say, for my needs, this is the best one out there (well under say $600).

Oddly in the US this printer does not ship with a tray to print on CD or DVD printable media, but you can purchase a tray separately and enable the feature. I haven't been able to confirm this but it appears that it was disabled in this country because someone other than Canon holds a patent on that feature (which sounds silly to me... like holding a patent on printing on paper) and they would not license it to Canon.

You'll also have to remove the plastic door that was placed over the CD/DVD tray insert slot. Just open the printer, and snap it off by pulling or prying. This was easier than I expected and took only a few seconds. I only pulled it off with my hand (and fingernails.) No tools required.

Anyway, to switch it to UK (instead of US) mode and enable printing, follow these instructions:

1. Plug the printer in, but leave it powered off. If it is already on, turn it off.
2. Press and hold the Stop/Reset button.
3. While still holding the Stop/Reset button, press and hold the Power button.
4. Hold both of them down for 5 seconds, then release the Stop/Reset button, continuing to hold down the power button.
5. Press and release the Stop/Reset button 2 times.
6. Release the power button.

At this point the printer should power on, but it will enter a special service mode.

7. Wait until the green copy light on the control panel stops flashing. This takes about 30 seconds.
8. (Optional) If you wish, you can press the Stop/Reset button 1 time, then press the Power button, and a ROM page will print. It should indicate US region at the top.
9. Press the Stop/Reset button 5 times to enter the "Set Region Mode". Then press the Power button.
10. Press the Stop/Reset button 4 times for Europe/UK (3 times for the US if you wish to change it back later). Then press the Power button.
11. (Optional) If you wish, you can press the Stop/Reset button 1 time, then press the Power button, and a ROM page will print. It should indicate Euro region at the top.
12. Press the Power button 2 times to save the changes.

I purchased my CD/DVD tray Type D from here: annocjr on eBay

I bought my mp830 in the uk, it came with the cd adaptor so was supposed to print cds. Spent an hour trying to print cd's tonight for the first time. no joy. Found your tip which did the trick. For some reason my machine had Japan (JPN) regionalisation and was presumably the reason for it not working. Cant figure this out. Probably its just shoddy configuration control by Canon here. Alternative is that it was some grey import, but that doesnt explain the cd adaptor or the provision of cd design software in the bundle.

Thanks for your excellent instructions.

I had the exact problem that zuzzy was having. I live in Ireland and bought the printer here, was trying to print a DVD and no joy. By the grace of god fouond your blog, started your workaround even before I saw zuzzy's comment (which gave me hope that it would work) and sure enough, my region was set to Japan. What the hell is Canon at, sending us the machine set to the wrong region. Fortunately, I don't have to ring them and have a row.

Thank you so much for your fix. You saved my hide and my boyfriend's sanity!

Thank's so much Aric, worked a treat (and I bought mine in Australia). One thing that wasn't obvious to me from your instructions was the need to uninstall and reinstall the driver. That said, you saved my sanity!

Cheers,
Lorne

Hello Aric,

I followed your directions to a T and even bought my tray from the same gentleman. When I attempt to print on CD's the printer sucks the tray in and then spits it out and says there is no printable CD on the tray...any ideas on why this happens?

Thanks

Aric said...

To anERdoc:

It sounds like the printer doesn't see the DVD media. It's possible the sensor use to detect the media is faulty. That would be bad, as it would be hard to return a printer under warranty because an unsupported hack didn't work correctly.

If you look at the the large reflective (silver) square near the center of the tray should be how it detects if a disc is there. Make sure you are using printable media that covers up that square. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to try.

I'm Having the exact problem as "ER Doc". The printer spits out the disc and says there's no disc in the tray.Anybody have any ideas?

GREAT instructions. When I first looked at them I thought it was a joke, but they worked like a charm. I bought an mp 830 6 months ago for the company, and now I have one at home, but the new one was blocked for cd printing, with tray included. Both in Romania.

I knew there was a way but didn't know how until I found your site. When I first bought my MP830 in Canada it came with a manual that indicated CD/DVD printing--but a separate notice was included saying the CD/DVD info was not correct. Obviously the functionality was there but just disabled. Thanks so much. I've ordered the tray and will give it a go.

Worked out great. At first I had a bit of trouble because I expected to see something on the MP830 screen to indicate which sub-menu you are in, but no. If one just follows the instructions it works great. Thanks!!

Okay, I have had my MP830 for months now. It has been working great, but now I'm running into trouble with the CD printing. First, when trying to open the CD Label print prog I get a windows error message "Thunking Spooler APIS from 32 to 64 Process has stopped working". This is followed by a CD label print error message "A compatible printer for printing CD media was not found". I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and the programs, but still no good. Any ideas out there?

I have a Canon MX700 All-in-One. Is it possible to change this printer to print on CDs/DVDs as with the MP830? This is one feature I would really like. I had an Epson printer that could print on a CD or DVD, but I really did not like the printer, and it was an ink hog.

I also have an MX700 and want to know if I can hack it to print CDs directly.

Has anyone had any luck with an MX700 ?

thanks so much for posting this- but i'm having trouble and ready to tear my hair out.

i followed your instructions but I have no idea if i've set the region right. i can't get the ROM page to print out. Every time I hit the stop/reset button as you say, the the alarm light toggles on and off with each press- not sure if this is supposed to happen. But after hitting it five times and saving, i try to print out the ROM sheet and just the alarm light is lit. i tried printing it out before i changed regions and it wouldn't print then either.

kimprobable said...

oops, need to add..

tried to print as it is, and i'm getting error 1851. I'm printing from Canon's labelprint on a mac. it's telling me the CD tray door is open and needs to be closed. I took the tray out and then my label prints out on regular paper.

ok, i'm a dope. i don't know which variable i had wrong, but i finally re did everything from the start and it's now working.. thanks SO much.

where i tripped up.. and it's only because i apparently don't know how to read very well:

-i reinstalled the drivers, though not sure if i needed to or not.
-I had to close the DVD slot for the ROM page to print out (duh)
-there are two places where you need to change the paper source when using canon's labelprint, and had i actually READ more carefully this may have all worked from the start- they give you tons of prompts and you just need to follow them when printing.

THANKS for this!

Do you (or somebody here) still have the original installation CD?

I have lost mine and the software I have downloaded from Canon site is not the same as the CD. I cannot use the "scan" button on the printer to initiate a scan. The scanner works if you initiate the scanning from the PC but nothing happens when you press the "scan" button. This used to initiate scanning on PC with the original software.

It was a very nice feature because I travel a lot. So anybody at home (regardless of their PC knowledge:) could easily scan a document and send it to me when I am away from home.

So, any help will be appreciated.

You can email me at Nihat DOT Karaoglu AT gmail.

Thanks.

Hi,
I'm hoping you still can answer a question for the mp830 because it has been a long time and no longer available. I had one loved it the scanner died so i was lucky enough to find a new one. finally got it and now I am trying to enable the DVD printer but I am having an awful hard time. the last time I did it I don't remember so much trouble. I follow your steps but then it does go to the screen but only says canon and under that idle I don't know what else to do. Can you please help me? The reason I wanted this same printer was for the wonderful DVD and Cd's i could print.
Thank you for anything you can do.
My email is RitchieR1@Verizon.net
Have a great weekend.
